Ohio Latino Affairs Commission and Community Organizations to Kick-Off ‘2016 Ohio Latino Vote Campaign’

Columbus, OH – Beginning in May and through Hispanic Heritage Month, the Ohio Latino Affairs Commission (OCHLA) will join efforts with Hispanic grassroots organizations to increase the registration of Latino voters for the November elections.  Approximately 199,000 Latinos, representing half of the Latino/Hispanic population in Ohio, are eligible to vote.

The Ohio Latino Vote Campaign aims to empower leaders and organizations to educate eligible voters about the importance of their vote. Organizations will host voter registrant trainings, voter registration events and will provide guidance to new voters all through Election Day.  Toolkits and bilingual voter registration forms, as well as links to Ohio’s Secretary of State Office and national bilingual resources are available online through http://ochla.ohio.gov

There is undeniable opportunity for Latinos in Ohio to impact politics at all levels of government this election. Moreover, Latino grassroots organizations and leaders are uniquely positioned to help increase Latino/Hispanic participation in Ohio.  More than 15 entities including the Ohio Hispanic Coalition in Columbus, El Centro de Servicios Sociales in Lorain, Adelante Latino Resource Center in Toledo, Esperanza Inc. in Cleveland, Hispanic Ministries in Dayton, MujerLatinaToday and Su Casa Catholic Charities in Cincinnati and LULAC Ohio are among the initial supporters of the campaign.

There will be two trainings for voter registrants facilitated by the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) a nationally recognized trailblazer on Latino voter registration efforts. The events will take place on Saturday, June 11th in Lorain and Saturday, August 6th in Columbus. Additionally, the Latino Vote Campaign webpage includes a calendar voter registration events.   Organizations and leaders are encouraged to send information on Voter Registration Events to support this awareness and civic participation campaign.

The Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs is an organization that advises state government on issues affecting Hispanic Ohioans, connects the diverse Latino communities across the state, and builds the capacity of community organizations so they may better serve the fast growing Latino population of Ohio.
