YMCA of Greater Cincinnati Salute Gala benefits leaders of tomorrow
Cincinnati, OH (September 28, 2012) – The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati Black and Latino Achievers College and Career Readiness Program will hold their 34th annual Salute Gala on Friday, November 16, 2012 at the Sharonville Convention Center, located at 11355 Chester Road. The event that begins at 6 p.m., will honor 34 local men and women who have served as outstanding role models for young people, encouraging them to pursue college and career goals. Legend of Education Awards will be presented to Northern Kentucky University, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, and sister Mararita M. Brewer. “The gala will also pay tribute to our sponsors, dedicated students in the program, and their families,” said Executive Director of the Black and Latino Achievers college and career readiness program Toni Miles. “The gala is the chief fund raiser for the college and career readiness program that recorded a 100 percent college enrollment rate in 2012,” said President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati Sandy Walker. “Several deserving young people will receive college scholarships as a result of the Salute Gala.”
Mallory Screws is a 2011 Black and Latino Achievers scholarship recipient. Now a freshman at Northern Kentucky University studying mechanical engineering, she encourages young people to get involved in the Y mentoring program. “It’s never too early to get involved in making decisions that will impact your whole life,” said Screws, during a break in classes at the Highland Heights campus. “My best advice to young people heading off to college is to do what my mom told me, have fun, but realize your main goal is to succeed and graduate.”
Entertainer and humanitarian Sheila E. is the featured artist at the November gala. She shares the Y’s passion for elevating youth and helping them find and pursue their spark in life. Sheila E. will hold a free music clinic for teens on Thursday, November 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the School for the Creative and Performing Arts, located at 108 West Central Parkway in downtown Cincinnati. A limited number of spaces are available for the clinic; go to the website http://myy.org/our-ys/branches/black-and-latino-achievers and click on Gala to register.
