CINCINNATI — A one-day gathering at the University of Cincinnati on Friday, Oct. 21 aims to help colleges in the region enhance their Latino/Hispanic student experience and develop leadership skills among students.

Registration for the free 2016 Ohio Latino Student Summit is now open to college faculty, administrators, staff and students, as well as others from the community with a vested interest in the recruitment, retention and success of the growing Latino student population.

The gathering will be held at the Tangeman University Center on UC’s main campus, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Following the end of the summit there will be a social networking reception for attendees.

Partners include UC’s Office of Ethnic Programs and Services, UC Blue Ash, the Lindner College of Business, and the Division of Student Affairs.

With the theme of “Building Your Leadership Team,” the summit will provide workshops, motivational speakers, networking opportunities and the chance to create an action plan to enhance the Latino/Hispanic student experience on your respective campuses, said Priscilla Ayala, program coordinator for the Office of Ethnic Programs and Services.

Students who attend the summit will gain valuable leadership, professional and networking skills that will aid them in boosting student success on campus, Ayala added.

According to the Pew Hispanic Center, the Latino high school dropout rate has decreased significantly since 2000 and more Latinos are now pursuing postsecondary education. In 2014, 35 percent of Hispanics ages 18 to 24 were enrolled in a two- or four-year college, compared to only 22 percent in 1993. However, Latino student enrollment still lag behind other groups in obtaining a four-year degree.

“Ohio’s Latino population is young, vibrant and in an ever-increasing direction,” said Lilleana Cavanaugh, executive director of the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino efforts, which is supporting the summit. “Developing strong Latino leadership is key to promoting prosperity in our community, and the Commission is proud to partner with the University of Cincinnati to help move the needle forward.”
